Table Tennis Bat Handle

The handle is a crucial component of a table tennis bat, as it allows players to apply pressure and make micro-adjustments during gameplay. Choosing the wrong type or size of handle can hinder a player's development. There are six types of handles, but we will focus on three main types along with the Chinese handle:

  1. Flared Handle: The flared handle has a gravity centre closer to the grip and blade. It fits comfortably in the palm, providing confidence and control. This handle is well-suited for forehand-dominant players who excel at powerful strokes from mid-distance.

  1. Straight Handle: The straight handle is versatile, allowing for different grips when switching between forehand and backhand shots. This type is favored by many European players as it offers a balance between backhand and forehand power.
  1. Anatomic Handle: The anatomic handle is preferred by hitters and smashers who focus on flat hitting rather than looping. It is commonly used in the USA and is suitable for quick attacks close to the table, but may not perform well for looping or long-distance play.

  1. Chinese Handle (Penhold): Predominantly used by players from Far Eastern countries, especially China, the Chinese handle is excellent for serving and service returns. It provides wrist freedom to generate different spins.

Defenders typically prefer a slightly longer straight handle for more power and torque away from the table.
The size and thickness of the handle is crucial considerations. It should not be too small or too long, and the thickness should allow for proper execution of pressure on shots, primarily applied by the thumb and index finger. Sanding the curves of the handle that attach to the blade is essential to achieve a good grip.
Young players under 10 years old may need to cut the end of their handle for a more comfortable grip.
I hope this information helps you make the right choice when selecting your bat.
Until next time, Play Right.
